Closer to Move In

We are in the final stretch before we take the plunge and move into the house. Let me be clear when I say ‘move in’, that doesn’t mean unpacking all our belongings and getting settled. It means setting up a bed, bringing over some clothes and dishes and living in the house while we do the final finishings. Ultimately we want to get most of the appliances set up too.

Here is the kitchen with the cabinets and island installed. We had the laser templating done yesterday for our quartz counters. Could get them installed any where from 2 – 4 weeks from now. Hoping it is sooner than later.

We already moved in our beverage fridge, next will be the dishwasher, fridge and freezer

The laundry room cabinets are installed, tile floor is complete and we put back the washer and dryer this morning. The cabinets are missing a panel by the side of the washer, so we are getting that remedied.

The stairs are almost finished, just need touching up on the painted portions.

They turned out fantastic!

One of the big lessons I’ve learned about building your own home is that

  1. There will always be messes and dust. During each phase as we progressed, I would think, great this phase (e.g. drywalling) is over, now I’ve cleaned up the house, it shouldn’t get this dusty/dirty again. Wrong!!! Everything makes a huge mess. I’m constantly cleaning and then it is dusty and dirty again right away, sigh…
  2. There is soooo much garbage to deal with. I guess I always new there would garbage, but I sure didn’t realize the volume we would have to deal with. We had a small dumpster rented, but we filled that up quickly with the garbage from the shingling and framing. The cost for one of those dumpsters out here is way too expensive. Once all the snow melts I suspect we will have to spend many days cleaning up and hauling away debris

I hope we are getting our last winter storm of winter. We had a big dump of snow last night.

Aron plowing our road this morning

The snow does make things look pretty, but we are ready for green!

This morning

Good news is on the way though, here is our forecast for this week!

Aron Update: Aron is heading to Calgary to see a new specialist to see if he thinks he can do anything for Aron’s detached retina. I’ll let you know how things go.
